34 INDIA'S HYDROCARBON OUTLOOK 2024-2025
2.2 India's West Coast Basins
There are six basins located off India's west coast.
Geologically, these basins namely (i) Kerala-
Konkan, (ii) Mumbai, (iii) Saurashtra, (iv) Kutch, (v)
Cambay and (vi) Rajasthan belong to west coast
passive continental margin under rift tectonics.
Under the upcoming HRAS 2025, the resource
assessment of conventional plays and shales
will be conducted in these six basins as a part of
Phase II scheduled tasks.
The Mumbai basin tops the list in terms of both
discovered and undiscovered hydrocarbon in-
place. This is closely followed by Cambay and
Rajasthan basins.
Saurashtra and Kutch are two emerging basins
with increased exploration activities.
